With markets “potentially” in down-turn’s or corrections, it’s always interesting to consider that the internet actually benefits from those sorts of times as with money tight, marketing executives will continue to gravitate toward the internet, looking for more measurable ad formats to buttress their positions.

This year alone, the US will hit $27.5 billion in terms of online ad spend:

Whilst you have to take these things with a pinch of salt, the forecast that always intrigues me is USwitch’s 2007 prediction that online sales are set to quadruple to £162bn by 2020, accounting for approximately 40% of the total UK retail spend.

God knows what a 40% share transaltes to in the US (or will be in China, India etc).

    Nice though :)

Exactly - I always take predictions with a pinch of salt and maybe some pepper too. Personally, the more budgets are hit offline - the more they come and spend online.

Nic did a good follow-up piece on this from a VC perspective at: http://www.theequitykicker.com/2008/01/11/bright-spots-in-the-gloom-predictions-and-planning/
